As research Professor at the CSIC, María Dolores Hernando Guil currently works at the Experimental Station for Arid Zones. The main line of her scientific work is based on studying processes or models that allow for improving the sustainability of the agri-food chain and food safety. She has worked on the development of chemical contaminant monitoring programs to evaluate and control the impact of the agri-food chain on different environmental compartments; water decontamination through advanced technologies; the study of nanoparticles and water quality; the reuse of water in crops for energy purposes; the management, recycling and valorization of plant waste; the reduction of inputs in the processing of fruits and vegetables (post-harvest); the control of food quality and safety through the evaluation of residues of phytosanitary products, veterinary drug residues and the release of chemical substances from plastic packaging; and the effects of phytosanitary products on the loss of pollinators. Over the last 15 years, María Dolores Hernando has participated in 5 EU Projects in the 5th- 7th framework programme and in 10 nationally funded research projects related with environmental sustainability, contamination, water research, protection of natural resources, food safety, and food quality.
