Professor Letcher is a Senior Research Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University. He is internationally recognized as a leading authority in the fields of environmental chemistry, ecotoxicology, and contaminant dynamics. His career contributions have advanced global understanding of persistent, emerging, and complex organic contaminants and their impacts on water, ecosystems, and human health. His research underpins the Canadian Chemicals Management Plan, the Northern Contaminants Program, and contributes directly to international agreements such as the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. Professor Letcher has led pioneering research on contaminant exposure, fate, and biological effects in Arctic and freshwater wildlife, including long-term monitoring of polar bears, seabirds, and aquatic species. His work integrates One Health principles, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental, animal, and human health.
