PSIPW was the platinum sponsor of the 19th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST2023), which was held in Kos, Greece from 3-6 September 2023. PSIPW has enjoyed a long relationship with CEST and has been the conference’s platinum sponsor since it’s 13th session in 2013.
CEST2025 was organized by the Global Network of Environmental Science and Technology jointly with the University of the Aegean (Greece), the University of Salerno (Italy), and the Open University of Cyprus (Cyprus).
The plenary lecture for the Opening Session of CEST2025 was delivered by PSIPW’s 5th Award (2012) Water Management & Protection Prize laureate Professor Damià Barceló Culleres. The topic of his lecture was “Climate Change ,Water Scarcity , Emerging Contaminants and Microplastics: Global Vision and Local Solutions in the Mediterranean region: The Need for Advanced Water Treatment and Management”.
The final plenary lecture was delivered by PSIPW’s 6th Award (2014) Alternative Water Resources Prize laureate Professor Polycarpos Falaras. His topic was “Nanotechnology processes for environmental protection and solar energy conversion”.
Professor Falaras also represented PSIPW at the opening session, where he introducted the Prize and recent 11th Award Prizewinners to the attendees, as well as at a special tribute session in memory of Professor Dionysios (Dion) Dionysiou, the PSIPW 10th Award (2022) Creativity Prize laureate who passed away in 2023.
In the short time that PSIPW had the honour of Professor Dionisiou being our laureate, he was very active in supporting and representing PSIPW around the world. He was not only a visionary scientist who believed that access to safe drinking water should be a global right, but a mentor, a colleague, and dear friend.
In addition, the Prince Sultan Water Specialist Event Participation Grant was awarded to a distingished researcher, Dr. Shaista Shafiq. She is the head of the Department of Biotechnology, University of Faisalabad, Pakistan to present to present her research at CEST2025. Her current research focuses on the treatment of industrial wastewater and the synthesis of industrial chemicals.
The topic of her presentation was: “Nanobiotechnology for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater”.
Two young researchers received the grant awards this year. They were:

Yu-I Lin (Yui) of the National Taiwan University, Taipei, who presented “Design and Evaluation of a Scalable Shock Wave Electrodialysis with Multi-Cell Stack for Efficient Desalination”.
and:
Eva Salgado of the Laboratory for Process Engineering, Environment, Biotechnology and Energy (LEPABE), Porto, Portugal, who presented “PhotoBioValue project: Microalgae-bacteria consortium for the bioremediation of urban wastewater in pilot-scale photobioreactors”.
